Liora Day, half-human, half-mess with her and you'll die Damaclan, had been thrown onto a rough path at a very early age. But when she is broken out of a cage by Devren, the young captain of the SS Kratos, she is shown that perhaps humanity does have a heart. The Kratos is set on a mission to rescue fallen surveyors from the Revolutionaries, and Liora is given the choice to follow her Damaclan instincts, or trust Devren's dark eyes and captivating smile that promise an adventure unlike any she has ever experienced.

As other have commented; there is a some confusion on the part of galaxies, stars and planets. Distances and the basic laws of physics. I had hoped that there was a reason; that would be revealed as to why each 'galaxy' had a singular star and planet. But no, it's just a layer of confusion.I'll be reading the remainder of the series. In the hopes that the science portion of the fiction picks up.
As it is; the series is very light, and moves around rather unevenly. Also the story does not end in this book; in continues in the second book.
Side note: the last chapter in this book is also the first chapter in the second.

Daybreak Girl from the Stars Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Cheree Alsop Michele Carpenter Books Reviews
The main character, Liora, is a very mixed up but emerging person who is a genetic mutt! Half of her DNA is totally violence oriented whilst the other half is straight human, which is to say violent when necessary but basically well rounded. In the beginning she was a slave in a circus and had never known anyone she could trust or care for, and even when she is rescued from that hell she has a hard time adjusting to the idea that she can fit in anywhere. The action is frequent and well written and over time she keeps trying to both find reasons to fit in and reasons to strike out on her own. This is not resolved in the first book, and makes you want to read more. I like the series a lot and hope the writer keeps them coming.
Wow! I'm hooked. I had a hard time putting this book down. Warning - it ends in a cliffhanger. Luckily I have the whole series so I was able to jump right into the next book. The writing is fantastic, the story believable, and the characters are just so fascinating and I just want to know what's next! Keeps me guessing as to what Liora's going to do next.
Well, if your tools of choice for making an income are language and words, then it is a good idea to master them. "Then" and "than" are not interchangeable. "Then" is used to sequence events. "The fuse was lit, then the dynamite exploded." "Than" is used to express a preference or to differentiate between choices. "I would rather die fighting than to die cowering in fear."
Also, are there missing paragraphs between the main character being removed from her circus transports cage and passing through the door to that hold, and walking down the clean bright decorated halls of the rescuers ship? Was there a magic worm hole tunnel in the door frame?
The space being traversed and explored is an order of magnitude larger than my credulity. Ships in a vacuum, land on an open deck of a space station, and there is atmosphere there on that open deck. A mechanical switch on a transport gate has to be activated by an appendage on a space ship flying a some percentage of the speed of light so that the ship will be transported across intergalactic distances.
Study the hard science fiction genre. Cherryh's Chanur series. The first 8 Honor Harrington books. David Drake's Hammers Slammers. The Girls from Alcyone. Ryder Windham's juvenile Star Wars and R.A. Heinlein.
Good the action sequences were fantastic and I enjoyed the world. I really love Liora.
And I liked the use of jump points in addition to warp. It made sense given that they're hopping between galaxies not just through one galaxy.
Meh
* it felt very much like Star Trek from a non-Federation point of view. But maybe that's me.
* I felt a bit misled and disappointed in the love interest. Well, it may not even be a love interest, but it feels like it's supposed to be.
*the ending felt like the middle of the novel, not the end. It was long enough of a book that it could have had a much clearer resolution to one of the problems. The one issue that was dealt with wasn't even handled by the heroine or the... partner (?? What would you call him? )
Personally, even though I really love Liora, her back story, her personality, etc, I do not love the writing enough to get any more of the books. Nor do I trust that the next installment won't just be another 'chapter' instead of a full story.
Liora is a Damaclan, a warrior species that can breed with human. Devren Matos was a officer of the Coalition warship Kratos who happened to be inspecting the ship of a circus owner, when he encounters Liora in a cage and returns to free her. Upon bringing her back to the ship, he and Liora were slapped into the brig by the Captain of Kratos. At that time the Kratos was attacked by rebel ships. In the ensuing firefight, the Captain of Kratos is killed and the crew freed Devren from the brig to become Captain. Their ship was invaded by Rebels. Liora swung into action and killed a bunch of them with her bare hands. That was just the first two chapters.
The book moves fast and Liora is an attractive character. However, the plot has a lot of surprises that are so improbable that you want to roll your eyeballs at the author almost every chapter. Liora turns out to be half human, the product of a human and the wife of Ubruo the Damaclan chieftain who tortured Liora for most of her life. Devren turns out to be the son of the Captain of Kratos. Tariq, the chief medical officer of Kratos, happens to be not only Devren's life-long best friend but also the victim of Ubruo who killed his wife and child. After Liora joins the crew of the Kratos and does many heroic deeds, they find themselves ordered to a place where all the rebels, worms, and other monsters also seemed to be converging. It was where the ultimate weapon, that could kill galaxies, had been secreted.
By now, the space opera nature of this story shouldn't be surprising to the reader any more The arias, the fight scenes, the tender love scenes, the adrenalin-filled fight scenes, the heroes repeated surviving apparently fatal encounters to return miraculously to the fight for even greater heroic achievements are part of a genre. Once you accept these coincidences as part of the genre, the story gets easier to swallow and is enjoyable. The book is a fast read. There are few errors and the writing is good
